The Forgotten Sentinels of the Woods |
Deep inside the Sariska Tiger Reserve, away from the well-trodden safari paths, lie the skeletal remains of old forest guard posts built during the princely era. These structures, constructed from local quartzite and lime mortar, once served as the primary eyes and ears for the Maharaja’s hunting parties. Today, they stand as crumbling reminders of a time when the forest was managed through human presence rather than electronic surveillance.

The Architecture of Isolation |
The design of these outposts is remarkably simple. A square room with thick walls and narrow slits for windows allows for a wide view of the surrounding scrubland while keeping the interior cool under the harsh Rajasthani sun. The roofs were originally flat, layered with stone slabs to withstand the unpredictable monsoon rains. These outposts were never intended to be grand; they were functional tools for survival in a terrain where tigers and leopards frequently crossed paths with forest staff.

Nature Reclaiming the Built Form |
As one walks past these structures, the creeping vines and encroaching root systems of Banyan trees show the relentless pace at which the wilderness reclaims its territory. The stone walls, once plastered with white lime, are now stained by moss and lichen. There is a distinct melancholy in watching these buildings return to the earth. They no longer protect the forest, but instead, provide shelter to small creatures like lizards and birds, completing a cycle that began centuries ago when the first stone was laid.
