The Royal Water Reservoir of Jaisamand |

Constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh in the early twentieth century, Jaisamand Lake remains a quiet witness to the engineering prowess of the Alwar state. Unlike the more famous Siliserh, this water body served as a strategic reserve for the arid landscapes surrounding the city. It was designed to capture the unpredictable runoff from the Aravalli hills, ensuring that the local farmers had enough irrigation during the harsh summer months. The stone embankments are built with a precision that prevents seepage, a technique rarely seen in modern hydraulic structures.

Rituals of the Rain |

In the past, the arrival of the monsoon at Jaisamand was marked by specific courtly rituals. When the water level reached the designated markers on the stone stairs, the royal family would perform a thanksgiving ceremony. This practice involved distributing grain to the laborers who maintained the dams and hosting communal meals near the water edge. The local people believed that the lake was a living entity, and disrespecting the water was considered a bad omen. These traditions fostered a sense of collective responsibility for water conservation that has largely faded from public memory.

The Ecological Shift |

Today, the area around Jaisamand is changing as the demand for water grows and the climate becomes increasingly erratic. The siltation of the lake bed has reduced its storage capacity, and the traditional methods of cleaning the canals have been replaced by mechanical dredging. While these changes are necessary to support the growing population, they often ignore the historical wisdom embedded in the landscape. Observing the lake today requires looking past the concrete modifications to see the original intent of the planners who built this for the next hundred years.
