The Hidden Architecture of the Royal Hunt |
Deep within the dense thickets of the Alwar district, away from the paved roads and the gaze of modern tourists, lie the remnants of royal hunting lodges. These structures were not built for public display but as private sanctuaries for the Maharaos during their expeditions. Constructed from local quartzite and lime mortar, these lodges merge with the rocky ridges of the Aravallis, making them nearly invisible from a distance.

The design of these lodges reveals a tactical approach to wildlife observation. Most of these sites feature elevated platforms and thick walls with narrow apertures. These windows allowed the royals to monitor the movement of tigers and leopards without alerting the animals to their presence. The cool interiors, cooled by the thick stone walls, provided relief from the harsh desert sun during the long hours of waiting in the scrubland.

The Decay of Royal Seclusion |
Today, these lodges stand in varying stages of decay. Roofs have collapsed under the weight of monsoon rains, and vegetation has reclaimed the courtyards where once the elite gathered. While the glory of the hunt has faded, these ruins offer a window into a lifestyle that existed in complete harmony with the forest. They remain vital markers of a time when the ruler was as much a part of the landscape as the wildlife they sought to track.
