The Merchants of the Aravallis |

Before the industrial revolution shifted the center of gravity, Rajgarh served as a critical node for trade between the desert plains and the northern capitals. The wealth generated here was not hidden in vaults but displayed on the facades of sprawling mansions. These structures, built by merchants who handled everything from textiles to spices, remain as physical records of a bygone economic era.

Design and Domesticity |

Unlike the defensive fortresses that dominate the hills, these homes were designed for comfort and social standing. The courtyards, known as chowks, acted as natural air conditioning systems, pulling cool air through the house during the harsh summer months. Intricate lime plaster work adorns the walls, reflecting local motifs that have survived the weathering of centuries. Despite the lack of maintenance, the symmetry of the jharokhas remains striking.

The Fading Legacy of Stone |

Walking through the narrow lanes of old Rajgarh, one notices the quiet decay of these residential palaces. Many are now divided among distant heirs or left to the mercy of seasonal rains. The sandstone carvings, once crisp and sharp, are slowly softening under the pressure of neglect. There is a distinct lack of awareness regarding the structural integrity of these buildings, which are slowly disappearing from the map of local heritage.
