The Green Heart of the Princely State | रियासती राज्य का हरा हृदय

Long before modern urban planning reached Alwar, the rulers envisioned a space for respite known as Purjan Vihar, or Company Bagh. Commissioned by Maharaja Shiv Dan Singh in 1868, this garden was designed to offer relief from the harsh summer sun. Unlike the arid landscape surrounding the city, this patch of land remains cool due to the dense canopy of ancient trees and a unique structural layout that captures the breeze.

Architectural Cooling Systems |

The garden houses a structure called Shimla, a double-storied building designed specifically for the royal family to spend their summer months. The engineering here is precise. The walls were thick enough to insulate the interiors, while the placement of windows allowed for cross-ventilation. It reflects how local architects understood thermal dynamics without the need for electricity. The garden also served as a meeting ground where the elite would gather, away from the rigid formalities of the City Palace.

Preserving the Botanical Archive |

Walking through the narrow paths of Purjan Vihar today, one finds species of trees that have survived for over a century. The garden acts as a living archive of the flora that once populated the Aravalli foothills. While the city around it has seen rapid growth, the garden maintains a quiet pace. It remains a rare example of how nineteenth-century landscape design prioritized natural cooling and biodiversity, offering a stark contrast to the concrete structures that define modern Alwar.
