The Anatomy of the Private Courtyard |

In the narrow lanes of Alwar’s old city, the traditional haveli is a dying organism. These homes were designed for a climate that demanded shade and cross-ventilation. At their heart lies the 'chowk', an open-to-sky central space that served as the lungs of the house, drawing hot air upward and inviting cool breezes to circulate through the living quarters.

The Erosion of Traditional Living |

As families grow and the demands of modern life take hold, these central courtyards are being covered with tin sheets or concrete slabs. What was once an area for social gatherings, drying grains, and family rituals is now a storage room or an extension of the kitchen. The loss of the central void represents a shift away from a lifestyle that was intrinsically tied to the sun's path and the seasonal changes of the Aravalli region.

Preservation vs. Progress |

Architectural historians often overlook these domestic structures in favor of grander monuments. However, the havelis of Alwar are the true repositories of local social history. Without a concerted effort to maintain these courtyards, we risk losing the last remnants of a design philosophy that respected the environment. The challenge lies in adapting these spaces to contemporary needs without destroying the structural logic that made them habitable for centuries.
